Purple Heart
This Purple Heart is not enough
A life lost is painfully too much
A father – a husband what did he leave?
A son to fight a future war.
We live in a world with peace no more
Final hours
In a land far away
Did he think of home that day?
A confused mind in the final state
Who will know that he was there?
In a uniform he was pride to wear
Moments before the lights go out
A final trip down memory lane
A life cut short, but who’s to blame?
What’s beyond the sky above?
What’s beneath my feet below?
What religion has the answers?
Who am I to ask the questions?
Right before the lights go out
On a table fighting for his life
Did he know that I was his wife?
Who was the last person he saw?
A fellow soldier running to help?
A medic in uniform; without a smile?
A image of a cross hanging from the sky
A dark shadow of a person unknown
A long dark tunnel with no lights on
12 shoes walking on wood
The sound is loud but I don’t hear
A US flag in my lap
A Purple Heart in my hand
When will war ever end?
