TREE SONG

While I was at the Annex my job had me driving around with my boss, cruising the timber.  We were looking for blow downs and dead trees to harvest for the Indian sweat lodge.  In spite of being a prison island there were scenes of forest beauty.  There was one spot that I would see every day and wanted to capture in a poem.  It took a lot of thought and rewrites until I had what I wanted.  This is one of those poems that will always be a favorite of mine even though I wrote it.   I guess I'm allowed to have favorites.

                   TREE SONG

The sunlight falling softly down,

Gently caressing in grays and brown.

Those guardians of the forest, tall

The song of the trees brings peace to all.

There is a silence seldom heard,

A special quiet, no sound, no bird.

If you're still and listen soon you'll hear,

The song of the trees, so quiet so clear.

The trees all sing of what they know,

The wisdom of times long ago.

Life that's old and life that's new,

The peace of the forest will comfort you.

To stand in wonder at sights like these,

And know God's presence in the trees.

The hymn they sing they sing from birth,

For this is the greatest church on earth.

In the fall the leaves rain down,

A blanket of gold and red on the ground.

It carpets the forest floor so deep,

Preparing the trees for winter's sleep.

Then there comes the winter's chill

Everything seems so gray and still.

Deep inside they wait and know,

The warmth of spring will make them grow.

And when at last there comes the sun,

Buds spring out, and new sap runs.

The trees will sing their gentle call,

Of peace on earth, good will to all.

I liked this for its simple subject, yet it cut you deep. So deep in fact that you felt then knew you had to write about that special spot. I commend you for that. on a side note, please read my poem "Love One Another (The Stupidity Of Racism)".
