THE CHAPEL WITH NO BELL

The newest building on McNeil Island, 1990, is a chapel.  It is a very attractive building, especially for a prison.  I attended several classes and meetings in that chapel but every time I went over for Sunday service there was no minister.  One Sunday morning I went over to the chapel and there were only four people and no minister.  I was shocked to find that the minister considered Sunday as his day off.  I sat in a little room under the bell tower and wrote:

              THE CHAPEL WITH NO BELL

Early Sunday morning and the sun is bright above,

I sit here in the chapel alone with just God's love.

High above the chapel, in a tower hangs the bell,

It's old blue-green patina shows the age it holds so well.

Today the bell is silent, there's no one to make it ring,

No one knows how long it's been since any one heard it sing.

The chapel in its silence cries, no service here today,

For you see there is no person to teach and help us pray.

A church without a preacher, it be-clouds a sunny day,

And so we sit in silence there's nothing else to say.

It's a quiet lonely chapel, for a teacher it appeals,

To bring comfort, joy and peace.  To help it's people heal.

I'm alone here in the chapel on this quiet Sunday morn,

I know I have to look within to find where love is born.

I know that love within my heart will make my spirit swell,

And even though it's quiet, God hears us ring the bell.

I really like this, Storng imagery in this poem, and also as StarPoet said, I could also hear the ringing of the bell, very strong piece.

And to add to Ryan, I could also hear it ringing as I read. That is true writing skill at it's finest.

I love the imagery this poem gave me while reading it. I almost felt as if i were there looking up at the bell.
