FACES

In the corridor next to the cell blocks there is a place called the Card Room where we can go in the evening for table recreation.  There are 4 pool tables and 8 large picnic tables.  At one of the tables every night met an informal Bible study group that I became very active in.  I took the position of the complete liberal and my goal was to make them think about what they read.  It was a lot of fun.  One of those who would stop by from time to time was a tall black man named Mark.  When I met Mark I was inspired to write about those in the card room.

                 FACES

I see a laughing, smiling face

People of color all over the place.

Showing joy, sometimes a frown

Faces of white, black, yellow, or brown.

A quiet look, talk that's gentle,

That touches subjects, sentimental.

Some sing or shout, grin like a clown,

laughing faces, black, yellow or brown.

Freedom in its truest form,

never should it ever end.

The spirit of love made real,

True caring by a friend.

Let's take care and respect,

Each one around.

Beautiful faces,

Black, yellow and brown.

So my friend let's go together.

Stormy clouds of life we'll weather.

Our hearts beat as one, with the same sound,

I love you, my brother, black, yellow, or brown.
