FIFTEEN GEESE AND ONE OLD CROW

While I was in the main side prison and having forced recreation.  I would go out in the yard and walk laps in the early morning  Many a morning I had most of the yard to myself.  Most convicts are not early risers. A large flock of Canadian Geese would spend the night on the grass of the infield.  I would smuggle crackers out of the mess hall and soon the geese came to know me by sight.  I became known as the "Gooseman."  When it was time for an afternoon ball game the Recreation director would come and ask me to move “my” geese out of the infield.  The geese always did what I asked.

FIFTEEN GEESE AND ONE OLD CROW

Fifteen geese and one old crow,

Wait for the man with the crackers to show.

They wait in the field with no place to go,

Fifteen geese and one old crow,

The big gray geese, Canadian by name,

Some bigger than others, but they look the same,

Gray and white from the north they come,

As for the crow, well, he looks like a bum.

His feathers are frizzled, he's not very neat,

He looks kind of scruffy, like he's been beat.

Toss out a cracker and the geese will run,

to chase off the crow, seems like great fun.

A goose dashes in, with its neck out low,

grabs the cracker, runs off the crow.

Try to give crackers, one for each bird,

The geese gather 'round, makes quite a herd.

Then here comes the crow, lickity-split,

Spots a cracker and he goes for it.

The cracker is gone, the crow is fast,

Throw another one out on the grass.

The goose gets this one, the crow's too slow,

But there's fifteen geese and just one old crow.

When the crackers are gone, they seem to know,

And walk away... the geese and the crow.

It was a treat for the geese and the old crow,

They'll be in the field tomorrow I know,

Waiting for me  and the crackers I throw,

Fifteen geese and one old crow,
