FROM THE INSIDE OUT

FROM THE INSIDE OUT

POETRY 1990

Where does the inspiration for poetry come from?  It would seem to relate to the experience of very strong emotions.  It is these feelings that generate poetry.  The need to express can become an overwhelming necessity.  When I became a part of the Correction system, I too felt the need to express and I chose to write.  Sometimes a poem or essay would almost pop into mind and I would write.  Sometimes these thoughts would hang around in the back of my mind for a long time, eventually to find themselves displayed on paper.

February of 1990.  I was in Jail... locked up with 14 other people I did not, or even want to know.  There was a movie on TV. one night called, "Hamburger Hill"...  a Vietnam story.  My brother had been in 'Nam and this story left me emotionally very upset.  After the lights were out and everyone had gone to bed I sat on my bunk , alone and wept.  I cried hard but silently.  I did not want anyone to notice even though my whole system was screaming to be comforted.  There was no one to turn to but God.  I prayed.  I wanted comfort and I wanted not to hurt.  I wanted peace.  As I sat there the thought came to mind that even though the lights were out it was still bright enough to read and write.  I took pencil and paper over to the day room table and wrote.  This has to be the fastest poem I have ever written, it took no more than 5 minutes to write it.  This poem/prayer was inspired.  I had no intention of expressing what I put on paper.

       PRAYER FOR THE CELL

It's dark and the cell is quiet now.

I pray, oh Lord your love somehow,

Fills our hearts with the light above,

Calm our fears with your great love.

Be with us God through out the night,

When morning comes with it's bright lights.

We start our day with hope anew,

Help us find the love that's you.

And as each day soon is gone

We turn to you for love that's strong,

To build our lives and start again

And know success 'cause you're our friend.

Bless each one here and meet their needs.

Bless each one who ask by word or deed.

Bless everyone who's life we share.

And bless me please, because I care.
