Apart

The logs placed in the fire place

Crackled softly as they glowed

UN boasting of the gift they gave

The warmth they now bestowed

It must be several months, since he last saw her

Outside the wind was howling

Rain hard pounding on the roof

He looked around the gathering

Most contained and quite aloof

It must be several months, since he last saw her

The Brandy in its bulbous glass

Invited him to taste

He thought back to his leaving

Full of unrelenting haste

It must be several months, since he last saw her

He glanced around the room to see

The trophy heads displayed

Reminders of the glory years

Where others dearly paid

It must be several months, since he last saw her

Tomorrow they would leave this lodge

Then start out on their way

Uncertain of the dangers

Would be faced from day to day

It must be several months, since he last saw her

She had waited for a telegram

Or letter since he left

As the days grew more and more

She felt abandoned and bereft

It was now several months, since she last saw him

The family had helped as best

As any family could

But ask them out of earshot

And it was not understood

It was now several months, since she last saw him

At work she went about her tasks

Just passing every day

Her mind now too preoccupied

To ever think of play

It was now several months, since she last saw him

The swelling in her belly

Now was notable to see

Imagined kicks the only link

With past forgotten glee

It was now several months, since she last saw him

Each night she knelt beside their bed

Prayed for his safe return

Against all odds, in hope

Of his adventures, so to learn

It was now several months, since she last saw him

Young Kerry entered into life

One cool autumnal night

After many hours of labour

A most welcoming of sight

It was now many months, since they had parted

She blossomed from the outset

Gaining weight and golden locks

It seemed just in an instance

She was modelling her frocks

It was now many months, since they had parted

The tightly straining main sales

Were now billowed with the wind

Now on the homeward journey

He just stood and simply grinned

It seemed like years, since he had seen her

A message had come through to say

I am on the morning tide

She welled up in that moment

With expectancy and pride

It seemed like years, since she had seen him

The dock yard seemed so busy

In the early morning light

As they peered into the distance

There was nothing yet in sight

It was now years, since they had parted

Horizon now distorted by a mast

Held tall and straight

Surely now announcing

The culmination of their fate

It was now years, since they had parted

Striding down the gang plank

His eyes soon sought her out

Relief he felt abounding

He could not help but shout

Then sweeping her towards him

Their lips were soon to meet

For both of them this moment

Long time now so to greet

His glance then fell on Kerry

He lifted her in one

To any known spectator

His pride was seen to shone

What time period is this set in? What do you mean in the first stanza, where it says, "UN boasting of the gift they gave..."?
