The Cabin

The lamp had used up all its oil

As the flame did start to dim

With moonlight scant that night it seemed

The prospects were now grim

So they huddled round the embers

Then clutched each other tight

As with every unexpected sound

Just added to their fright

They had stumbled on this cabin

Just in time as it would seem

As darkness fell around them

And the moon had lost its gleam

Though this unexpected refuge

Was now losing its appeal

As the loss of light and heat intern

Their confidence to steal

They had no form of bedding

Or any further form of heat

So they clung together starkly

Each now fixed upon their seat

All now praying for the morning

And the first rays of the day

For a chance to exit from this place

To end their enforced stay

As the final embers lost their glow

Deprived them of all light

The UN penetrated darkness

Filled them all with abject fright

Now the snow was slowly melting

The ranger’s ventures out

There was little hope of finding them

Most filled with knowing doubt

Though they came across the cabin

Smoke still issued from its stack

They wondered why they had not tried

To find their own way back

The party had been thirty strong

When it was seen to leave

The eight that now remained inside

Had no desire to grieve

It was just from within my mind.

Very good. Is this based on some actual incident, or is it just a product of your imagination? Elton
