Nessa Monroe

Sometimes, I remember you.

            The odds were against you,

But you had heart, and you never backed down.

“You’re so strong,” they would say.

But you never really felt that way.

It was luck, a fool’s game,

And you had luck, until that day….

              Well, sometimes I remember you.

You fell apart before you knew.

And one day, your world caved in on you.

Yes, sometimes, I remember you.

They say that I’ll get back to me.

    They say I’ll heal eventually.

They say it just takes time for peace—

   To work through every tragedy.

But I think she is gone for good.

The girl I built to save myself.

She’s memories and regrets and loss,

And I’m forced to become someone else.

Sometimes, I’ll remember her,

As I emerge a battered, wiser me.

I’ll pay tribute to the lessons learned

    And I’ll forge onward;

                I’ll find peace.
